I think this is one of the best Vietnam war movies ever made. I was a theater projectionist when this came out in 1978 and believe its lack of attention was due to poor marketing. Looking at the movie poster, you would assume this was some sort of wacky comedy (e.g. Gomer Pyle), but it is far from being a comedy. Vietnam veterans I spoke with at the time who saw the movie told me it was fairly accurate of their experiences in the military. This is also Andrew Stevens' first movie, in which he was nominated for a Golden Globe award for "Best Motion Picture Acting Debut". This is a power story following the lives of a group of young men, mostly who were drafted against their will. Misfits and screw-ups in the beginning who later matured and bonded as soldiers. During their tour of duty, they are offered an opportunity to be removed from the danger of combat in order to play exhibition soccer games against a Vietcong team. Trouble ensues when they discover that the team they are playing is owned by a notorious South Vietnamese general and they are ordered by their CO to purposely lose the game or be placed back on the front line.
