This is one of my all time favorite, not just because it makes me smile every time yours truly sees it, but because it's a well rounded film and although it really isn't a big budget film, it does convey the elements that even today's movies lack... this being substance and structure.

I'm of the school of thought that flicks should resemble a painting, a novel and collection of very personal intimate feelings in order to speak directly to the public's mind.

Muriel's Wedding is a story of overcoming the obstacles that keep everyone where they are, in this case, the obstacle happens to be Porpoise Spit, a town filled with the wretches of social climbing and those who are imprisoned in it are doomed to follow suit of anything society expects of them, extirpating individualism and turning them into zombies, just like Muriel's mother who, Deidre has given a glimpse of who she really was when she was 20ish.
