Kevin Reynolds's The Beast is a satisfiying B grade action flick even WITH Stephen Baldwin in it. The most interesting thing about it to me is it's subject matter, personally I have never seen it portrayed on film before, the Russian-Afghanistan conflict during the 1980s. Based on a stageplay called "Nanawatai" by William Mastrosimone, this film is about a tank crew lost in Afghanistan that is relentlessly pursued by Mujahadeen. The tank commander is played well by a maniacal George Dzundza while Jason Patric plays his young budding tank driver. A few things that bugged me was Afghani dialogue was subtitled but the Russians spoke english. Also, the dvd is only available in full screen. But all in all you've got some solid actors (Steven Bauer does a real nice turn as the Afghani leader; Erick Avari plays an Afghani who helps the Russians) making due with a somewhat limited script, some nice action pieces and a lot of cheesy but efffective 1980's synth music by Mark Isham. So if your in the mood for some desert violence, take a look at this film, you might be pleasantly surprised...

When you're wounded an' left on Afghanistan's plains.
An' the women come out to cut up your remains,
Just roll to your rifle an' blow out your brains,
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.

Brutal war film, disturbing and very compelling. Well written and acted, some visually stunning scenes of the area it is filmed. It does have some slow stretches but it is never boring. A very good film in all respects.
How much fuel do they have in that thing?
Very interesting war/drama film.
