Monster's Ball

I heard some great things about this movie, and had been meaning to see it for a while now; my expectations were pretty high, and for a while it looked as if those expectations would be exceeded. However, the brilliant first half could not save this film, which chugs along aimlessly during its last hour, hoping to get by on looks alone. Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry do what they can, but they have almost nothing of value to say once their relationship begins. None of the subplots were really resolved, and it seemed as if director Marc Forster didn't even know what the message of his own film was.

I hate hippies, but not nearly as much as I hate rednecks. In any case, the movie can always be seen as a time capsule for that particular time period (the late 60s) and some of the hippies really do have their moments. Those commune hippies though... man, I sure hope they starved into becoming something else than a hippie. Oh yeah and the "ride in the country while a rock song plays then follow with a redneck encounter" formula sorts of get repetitive after a couple of times. And the acid (or LSD, whatever) sequence is, well, annoying.

And why is this movie supposed to be about two guys who set out to discover america? I thought they were going back home after a sweet drug deal to enjoy the american dream. Ooooops.

This one takes place in South America too. And it's in Portugese. But I guess technically, the French finnanced the thing or something, because it says its a French film on the Criterion website.

This movie is one of those movies that does what it does so well, that it's a lot easier to overlook it's shortcomings.

The plot is a half-baked love triangle mixed with a bad horror movie with characters that are only mildly interesting.

But who cares? I haven't seen a movie this full of life and excitement in a long time. It's got amazing color and music, an epic visual style, funny jokes, people celebrating life, etc. It's impossible not to like.

Anyhow, the story is about a guy who's engaged to some random uptight chick, who falls in love with another girl, only to have some mysterious guy in a skeleton costume (whom we get the idea is more a spirit then a person) stalk her and try to kill her. All of this is done with the backdrop of Carnival in Rio De Jenero, and I think if I have to die young, I'd like to die drunk in a gutter during this. At least if it's half as much fun as it looks.

Yes, the plot is silly, and not that interesting. But trust me, you really won't care. There's singing, dancing, hot girls, beautiful countryside, great costumes, great music, and the stupid plot will work anyway because you'll be having so much fun.

Definately reccomended. I can't in good conscience give it any higher of a grade, but I enjoy it even more then it lets on.
