high school musical 2 was better. Also Saving Private Ryan is better.
I was expecting another High School Musical but instead I got a smart, witty, and entertaining musical flick that actually had DECENT MUSIC! There was no "We're all in this together" crap which had me jumping for joy. The characters were funny and interesting and the dialogue had enough indie rock references to have me grinning and giggling.
I hope that whenever I have kids they stick to musicals like these and avoid anything HSM related like the plague.
A 'Must See Movie'. Characters evolve into real people you care about. Surprise endings you just don't see coming. Loose ends very nicely tied. Vanessa Hudgens can act, seriously act! Great new music. Solid acting. One of the best movies of the year.
The music is doubtless the best aspect of this film (David Bowie!), but the rest is entertaining. Some surprisingly good writing and character development for what I thought would be a Disney-esque teen flick, plus a nice helping of genuinely-funny comedy.
I loved this movie and my kids did too. I felt like I was watching a movie about (real) kids in a (real) high school. Not all sappy sweet like a Disney production. Not so predictable either. Great music, what I grew up listening too. I hate to see this movie disappear after only a week in theaters. Hopefully, it will make some $$ in dvd rentals. I thought more kids would want to see this.
Great just what we need another boring teenage wannabe my dream is so hard movie it makes me sick.
Bandslam is an almost shockingly engrossing and thoughtful movie recalling some near-classics as "Revenge of the Nerds", "Say Anything", "Breakfast Club" and most especially "High Fidelity." The presence of Disney regular Alyson Michalka and Vanessa Hudgens always the marketers to frame this as "High School Musical 4" which puts asses in the seats but short-changes what is actually a more far more substantial and less sticky sweet concoction. Also it deals with a few dark themes, their presence makes the happy ending feel earned and you'll leave the theater elated, repeating some dialog gems and humming David Gates "Everything I Own." The only major shortcoming are the voices of Hudgens and Michalka who are plenty tuneful for the ballads but lack the pipes that balls out rock numbers require. However, if they weren't in the film no one would have seen it so the compromise may be worth it.
The trailer, plot, and actors in this movie make this film have much lower expectations than it deserves. Thought by many to only be yet another teen movie with cliches and a simple plot. However, viewing leaves one pleasantly surprised. This film, whilst clearly aimed at a tween/teenage audience, is surprisingly enticing to older viewers too. Gaelen Connell is brilliant as Will Burton, a perfect mix of geek and realism. The songs written for the film (especially "Phil's Song") are surprisingly good for this type of film. The narrative is strong with enough comedy to keep it light, but enough moments of drama to make you really engage with and care about the characters. This is a very well written and put together film for its genre. The special guest at the end, although somewhat expected, add a bit of extra star quality in this unexpected success. Overall a very enjoyable teen flick, with more strength than most.
While the emotional parts are pretty credible and the songs are enjoyable, the acting is iffy and the jokes are just terrible. It's basically just another stupid teen film, and I'm frankly surprised at the ratings. I should've spent my money on District 9 instead. :(
Took my 9 year old and her friend to it. Fabulous movie. I was expecting a kiddy flick. Was quite surprised of the quality, the music and a fair (albeit) predictable storyline.
