Just done with season 8, which I have to say, is probably the best season so far. Understand now why season 5 ended like it did. On to season 9!
We've got four back-to-back fillers in the final season. Way to go team Supernatural. Slack on...
@j_miss exactly what i've done I only started watching because of Cas and then I watched seasons 4-9(10) in one go and now i'm addicted to it and currently watching season 1. its so strange to think about how much they grow ,it like they photoshop them to look younger !! love spn ((:
@Sunstroker Since you're in the business, you clearly know more than me. Keeping a show alive and interesting for 10 seasons is indeed tremendously challenging.
I'm 5 honking of starting this series but there is so many episodes that as I know my habits I'll watch it 8h a day and end up getting sick of it in the middle xD
@DiabloJunk You definitely raise some valid points, but I think your expectations might be a wee bit on the lofty side. For a show to make it to a 10th season requires the writing team to not only create a number of quality long overarching plot lines that I mentioned in my last post, but also to come up with the short "filler" pieces (like the meta episodes they've experimented with the past 4 years) to not only fluff it up, but to add depth and poignancy to those longer plot lines. While I am nowhere near the level of the Supernatural writers, I am a professional freelance writer who spends 6-8 hours a day tapping keys on everything from screenplays to instruction manuals. To keep characters fresh for 10 seasons - over 200 episodes - is truly an impressive feat.
@MovieLuffa i know its painful to watch first 3 seasons, but if you start with season 4 and go forward you will be so caught up with the story line that you will go back and watch every single one! I hated most of the episodes in season 1-3 but then i ended up buying every single season! Tryst me try watching from season 4 episode 1 and go back lather on... :)
@Sunstroker The writers are experimenting alright. But do the longstanding fans, who have been loyal to the show throughout the past years, deserve this experimentation? This is the final season, and writers/directors should be winding up stories, developing characters, and preparing for a nail-biting climax. Instead, they throw in fillers just about 8-10 episodes before the finale. The show has lost all its sense of seriousness at this point. Writers/directors are experimenting, perhaps to showcase their diverse capabilities that could help them land a new series contract after Supernatural ends.
@List.of.Neon I felt the exact same way when I got through season 5, but trust me when I say that nothing gets boring in seasons 6-9. The writers have gotten very good at creating good overarching plot lines to keep things fresh.
Watched everything up till season 6 now, and the end of season 5 feels right. It could have ended here, it could have but I knew it wouldn't, especially considering I only got to this show after watching a few eps of season 6 with a friend a few years ago. Basically what I'm trying to say is that with each time their deaths become more and more meaningless and it's finally regained meaning. It feels final, up until that last scene, and I wouldn't have minded it had it stayed that way. Anyways, gotta catch up to season 10 so onwards to season 6!
